Hemodialysis Catheter
Temporary Catheter –
Used in emergency dialysis, it is inserted into the vein in the neck (internal jugular) or thigh (femoral vein).
This is only for short-term dialysis (3-4 weeks). During this period, an AV fistula should be created and matured.

Permanent Catheter (PermCath) –
This is inserted into the jugular vein by tunneling it under the skin. It has a cuff that fits under the skin, reducing the risk of infection. If properly cared for, it can be used for several months.
- An AV fistula must be created at least 45 days before the patient requires dialysis.
- If an AV fistula is not ready when dialysis is needed, dialysis is started using either a temporary or permanent catheter.
- If dialysis starts with a temporary catheter, an AV fistula should be created immediately, as the fistula takes 4-5 weeks to mature, and a temporary catheter is only effective for this period.
