Kidney Transplant
In the final stage of CKD (Stage 5), a kidney transplant is the best option. In this procedure, one kidney from a donor is transplanted into the patient, and it takes over all kidney functions.
There are two types of kidney transplants:
- Live-Related (Living Donor) – In this case, family members such as parents, siblings, spouses, or children donate a kidney. If none of them are suitable donors, close relatives like uncles, aunts, maternal uncles, and maternal aunts can also donate.
- The donor’s blood group should be either “O” or the same as the recipient’s.
- Matching positive or negative blood type is not mandatory.
- In special cases, even if the blood group does not match, a transplant can still be performed using a special technique, which costs an additional 2.5 lakh INR.
- Cadaver Transplant – In this case, organs are donated by individuals who have been declared brain-dead but whose vital organs (such as kidneys, liver, and heart) are still functioning while they are in the ICU.
- Cadaver transplants involve a waiting list, and patients may have to wait several years for a suitable match.
- Live-Related (Living Donor) – In this case, family members such as parents, siblings, spouses, or children donate a kidney. If none of them are suitable donors, close relatives like uncles, aunts, maternal uncles, and maternal aunts can also donate.
